Education

I attend Kent State University in Kent, Ohio and am currently in the spring semester of my fourth (senior) year. I switched majors from Zoology to English in the fall semester of my junior year. My minors are Writing and Biology. I am currently maintaining a 3.76 GPA. Because of my major switch, I will be enrolled at Kent State for another year (into 2010). I plan to graduate at the latest in May of 2010.

Experience

At my high school (Willoughby South High School in Willoughby, Ohio), I was a member of the National Honor Society Tutoring Committee. I tutored different students in algebra. However, I feel most at home working in English or Biology, particularly English, as these are my major studies at this time. I received a 33 on my ACT, and a 1330 on my SAT, as well as a 5 (top score) on my AP Biology exam. I did not take AP English in high school, but I did take Honors English classes which contributed a 4.55 GPA with which I finished my senior year in 2005. In college, I have taken a number of different biology, and, more recently, english and writing courses, which have included numerous literature courses, two fiction writing courses and a poetry writing course. I am also currently enrolled in Teaching Poetry in the Public Schools, a course in which I am required to create poetry lesson plans and teach them to students of various ages in the Kent / Akron area. I have a very strong grasp of the English language, both grammatically and in the realm of vocabulary. I would like to be a tutor because I have a good knowledge of the subjects I am interested in, and would like to share that knowledge with others. I get along with children of all age groups, particularly those of grade school age. I have a wealth of experience working with children. For the past 6 years, I have been the recess coordinator for Vacation Bible School at my church, which requires me to plan and organize recess activities for over 100 children, ages 4-11, for one week each summer. I have also volunteered at my local elementary school, reading poetry and stories to the children and working at school carnivals. I believe the greatest experience that I have earned has come from helping my younger sister, who has Down's Syndrome, with her schoolwork. Working with her has helped me to learn patience and perseverance in working with children who may need more help than most in certain subjects. I cannot begin to describe how much this experience has helped me as a person and a tutor, but I know that it will be an enormous asset to me in my tutoring career.
