Nick R.
Private tutor in Willoughby, OH
Education
I received a B.A. in financial economics in 2016 from the University of Rochester with a minor in Mathematics and focus on Actuarial Science. I've also studied for and passed 5 SOA/CAS actuarial exams that focus on highly technical math and statistics topics.
Experience
Currently, I work as an actuary where I explain complex math and statistics topics to my business partners, and I spend much of my time studying for math exams for my certification. I have extensive experience learning with all kinds of media and methods, and I am incredibly patient and willing to due what it takes to help my students learn. Math is often taught in a way that focuses on memorizing patterns to correctly solve problems. This works for early math but can lead to poor understanding and frustration in more technical topics. I've succeeded in math and other technical classes because I focus on the intuition behind the concepts; this is the approach I bring to my tutoring. By prioritizing actual understanding over formulaic memorization, math becomes a much easier and more enjoyable thing to tackle! My goal as a tutor is to kill the "I hate math" stigma. When math is explained in an intuitive way, anyone is capable of understanding it. To align with my goal, if a session is relatively unhelpful, I will not accept payment. Tutoring compensation should not be based on the time spent doing it, but on the clear improvement in a students understanding and performance in the subject.

Hobbies
While I'm a "nerd" on the inside, if you met me you would never know it. I absolutely love sports. I was a high school and collegiate swimmer, and I coached 13-15 year olds for a while as well. I love to golf and play other pick up sports. And of course I am a massive Cleveland sports fan.
